The upgrade of an item allows players to increase the gear score of an item to 700 and also add an additional perk. Items can be upgraded if they are in your inventory and you decide to take them to the Kiln.
Certain items are worth upgrading because of their distinctive stats. (For example an excellently rolled breakpoint armor used in melee PvP). Other items, like weapons don't really change after an upgrade and therefore aren't worth the cost.
Weapons
Upgrades to weapons can increase their numerical stats, including attack damage, crit chance and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons also come with an unchanging bonus that increases the damage they deal per second. In addition there are many weapons with an added bonus that is activated when three or more of the same weapon is present on a unit. This bonus may be greater than the damage that a weapon upgrade alone can cause.
The cost of upgrading a weapon depends on its rarity and level. For instance the weapon with a +2 rating will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while the +3 model requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade a weapon will increase until it requires an upgrade to a higher level of Smithing Stones. At that point, it will reset back to one.
Upgraded weapons can also alter their base stats. This is usually a good aspect, but it may also have negative consequences. Upgrades can render items unusable, unless you are exceptionally lucky.
Upgrades can be made to armor items to boost their effectiveness. For instance, if you have chests or helms, this will increase its base defense while a belt and gloves will improve their required strength and dexterity. Armor also has an option to reroll its Enhanced Defense percent, which means that it can sometimes change its roll to a lower value.
The upgrade template of a weapon will show the new stats it will gain when upgrading along with the relative value of those stats. This means that the weapon will gain 33% attack damage when it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. However the 3% does not mean that it will strike 3 times less often as it is an absolute number.
A weapon can also be rerolled using the green button, which is accompanied by circular arrows within the menu for items. The item will be rerolled and alter its stats but it won't reset the weapon's level nor bind to account status.

Making a few improvements to your armor can make a huge differences in your ability to survive. Certain sets offer massive increases in resistance to curses, poisons and fire as well as magic. This can make it easier to navigate difficult terrains. In general, the more defense you have for your character, the greater health you will gain from each point. You can upgrade your armor by visiting one of the Great Fairy Fountains. For example, the Champion Leathers can be upgraded to +5 defense, which allows you to keep up with a decent-sized group of enemies in most cold conditions and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded up to +20 defense, providing you enough protection to withstand a full on raid with a few of your friends.
Note that armor can't be upgraded the same way as weapons, so you'll want to focus on upgrading it to gain physical power if you're Warrior or Spell Power if you're a Mage. It is also recommended to save your armor upgrades to upgrade the armor you'll still wear by the end of the story, such as the Ring of Lightning, Spectral Shield or the mask you use in the final boss fight the Monter Parts Merchant Mask.
By giving the jeweler 10 Twinkling Titanite in Gerudo Town, you can unlock some perks on your armor. Generally, you'll want to keep these upgrades for the weapon you'll be using to win the game such as the Longsword, Battleaxe or Warhammer however, it could be useful to have some improvements to the helmets and chest armor that allow you to stealth around some monsters.
Potions
Potions are liquid substances that, when consumed, give the player the illusion of status for a few minutes. There are five types of potions with different effects and durations. Some potions can be upgraded to enhance their level of effectiveness. In addition, the effects of some potions can be enhanced by adding glowstone dust or redstone to them.
Potion upgrades cost a certain amount of XP. This can be earned by making them on a crafting table or the Alchemist's chest. The cost of upgrading varies based on the type of potion used and the item's Rarity and Mark Level.
To upgrade a potions you need to right-click it in your inventory. Select "Upgrade" from the menu. This will open a GUI that allows you to select the potion you want to upgrade and the amount of experience they'll give you when upgraded. Upgrades to potions can be made in batches of up to five at a single time, and the XP they provide will be added to your current XP count.
Once a potion has been upgraded, it won't degrade until you re-use it, or break the bottle it is stored in. You can also rename the potion by clicking it in your inventory.
Version 1.7.2 introduced a few changes to the way potions are used. Splash potions for instance have now a duration of 0:08 instead of the 22.5 seconds shown on the hover display of the item. The table of potion now crafted from four Wood Planks, and two Glass. It is now able to be used in both Survival and Bedrock. Contrary to Java Edition, Bedrock edition potions are not able to be used in cauldrons. The same applies to using a potion within the cauldron that is filled. This will deplete the potion and refill the bottle.
Finally, there are lingering potions that are made using dragon breath and splash potions. Redstone is also added to lingering potions to extend their effects. Resource has been rearranged to appear more like the Java Edition. New potions are also added, such as the potion of leaping as well as decomposition.
Trinkets
A trinket can be an ornament that is small and inexpensive or piece jewelry. It may be a reference to an object or decoration that serves a function but isn't particularly significant like a thimble. In some cultures, a trinket is used to show affection or friendship between family members.
In addition to armor, weapons and potions, players can upgrade their trinkets. Upgrades can be made by paying the appropriate currency to an upgrade vendor. Trinkets, unlike other items which can be upgraded can be exchanged at any time without losing stats.
Upgrade vendors are located at the capitals of each zone and in some cases in dungeons. Upgrades for trinkets can be purchased with gold, tokens or fragments of rare trinkets.
Upgrades are a cost-effective alternative to buying a new trinket. You can upgrade a trinket with as little as 12 tokens. The new trinket will come with the same base ilvl as older one, and come with an additional 1% upgrade bonus.
Trinkets can be re-upgraded once they are no longer useful, allowing a player to increase their power and worth over time. They can also be traded between players which makes them an attractive alternative to gold.
In general players should upgrade their highest priority items first. This means that the top-in slot items for each class are upgraded first then their secondary gear and other equipment that they won't be replacing anytime soon (such as rings or cloaks). It is also important to consider your class's preferred stats when selecting which items to upgrade. For example, if Haste and Crit are the two most important stats for tankers, they should prioritize upgrading their helm, chest, shoulders, and belt.
Trinkets can be re-upgraded to a higher ilvl once they're no longer needed, and the new trinket will receive an additional upgrade bonus of 1. A re-upgrade, however, will cause the trinket to be destroyed unless it can be salvaged with the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or a higher tier salvage tool. This makes upgrading trinkets more expensive than other upgrades, yet is still cheaper than buying the new one.
